As private as a voice has to be
Voice messages are the most personal thing your iPhone holds. This page describes the path a recording takes through VoiceClue — in full, including the points where it leaves the device.
The uncomfortable part first
VoiceClue does not transcribe on your iPhone. The recording is transmitted TLS-encrypted to our server — Supabase, data centre in Frankfurt am Main — and transcribed there by Soniox at their EU endpoint; the processing takes place in the European Union.
Anyone who claims otherwise is selling you something. We would rather say it here than in the small print: for that one minute, your recording leaves the device. After that it does not — and what happens during that minute is below.
Transmitted along with it are the file name and the analysis settings: time zone, output language, language hints and your vocabulary. That vocabulary includes the sender names you have saved, so that names are spelled correctly in the transcript.
How long anything sits where
Retention is the question that counts — not whether something was transmitted encrypted.
At Soniox: until it is fetched
The file and the transcription job are deleted immediately after the result is retrieved, with an automatic second pass if the deletion fails.
On our server: until your app collects it, 24 hours at most
The finished result only waits to be picked up. An hourly clean-up removes whatever is left behind.
On your iPhone: until you delete it
Analyses, transcripts, tasks, sender names, the search index and settings stay local — until you delete them in the app, clear the app's data, or uninstall it.
What stays on the device, and how it sits there
Voice messages you keep are stored AES-encrypted in a local vault. In settings you can choose instead that every recording is deleted right after the analysis — then only the text remains. The rest of the local data is protected by iOS device encryption.
The search across your archive runs entirely on the device. Nothing is transmitted for the search itself; only if you choose the server-side answer do your question and the passages found travel to the EU — and they are not stored there.
Four decisions that are yours
Start without an account
VoiceClue creates a technical, pseudonymous account. You do not have to give an email address to begin.
iCloud sync is off until you turn it on
It is a decision, not a default. “Delete all data” also removes the iCloud copy when sync is on; if that fails for lack of a connection, the app completes it automatically later.
Voice profiles only with your consent
So that VoiceClue can recognise recurring voices, the app computes a sequence of numbers from which the recording cannot be reconstructed. iOS only, and only if you agree.
Calendar: write only, never read
VoiceClue can add appointments. It cannot look at your calendar.
The rest, briefly
One notification, and no others
VoiceClue tells you when an analysis is done. Never otherwise. Whether at all and how prominently is yours to set — including “not at all”.
Purchases go through Apple
You take out a subscription in the App Store. We never see payment details; we only learn whether your access is active.
Deleting means deleting
“Delete all data” clears the device and, with sync on, the iCloud copy. You can have your account removed entirely from within the app.
What VoiceClue does not do
No automated decisions with legal effect. No selling of data. No notification other than the one when an analysis is finished.
